THE ROLE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY IN INDIA’S GDP

Abstract
The Indian Information Technology (IT) sector share in India’s GDP has been widely studied. The present study based on secondary sources. IT is the attainment, processing, storage and distribution of vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by a micro-electronics-based combination of computing and telecommunications. It also examined the trends in Indian IT Production and Exports, composition of IT Exports and share in India’s GDP. The revenue contribution of production in country’s GDP accounted for 14.21 per cent in 2020-21 and contribution of exports 8.61 per cent in 2020-21. The export market, dominates the IT industry accounting for 65% of the revenue. Software products are among the most highly exported products from India. The share of Electronic Hardware exports percent in GDP increased from 0.49 per cent in 2011-12 to 0.58 per cent in 2020-21. It has been observed that the IT sector is not only contributes considerably to export earnings and GDP but also emerges as a major source of employment generation in the country.
