Abstract
Implementation of conventional and fractional order PID controllers to the load frequency control (LFC) in a two area interconnected system is analyzed and compared in this paper. A fractional order PID is a classical PID except its derivative and integral orders are fractional numbers in place of being integers. Operational stage of FOPID has determining of two more criterions besides the three parameters in classical PID. This paper uses manual optimization technique to execute the designing of the controllers. FOMCON is the toolbox employed to design FOPID controllers for both integral and fractional order systems. Comparison of various time domain parameters is done with the PID controller and it is shown that the proposed FOPID controller can significantly improve the system performance with respect to model dynamics. Simulations are performed on MATLAB/Simulink platform.
