HORIZONTAL BIOGAS PLANT
Abstract
The purpose of our project is to design and develop accost effective, efficient and fully automated Horizontal biogas plant in which governing parameters like temperature, pressure and pH can be monitored and varied to improve the efficiency of gas production. Here horizontal design for the digester is used instead of floating drum type to avoid problems like back pressure, free movement of scum inside the drum and rusting. The horizontal biogas design of the digester can support more capacity. Biogas generation takes place more efficiently in the temperature range of 33°C to 37°C and in the pH range of 6 to 8 due to active involvement of bacteria in these conditions. In order to maintain the temperature of the substrate between 33 to 37 degree Celsius solar water heater of 100 litres capacity is proposed. Hot water is circulated through the substrate for one hour in the early morning to compensate the reduced temperature. A control unit is proposed for the plant. The control unit ensures that temperature, pressure and pH are in the required range that supports the effective gas generation. The control unit comprises of two temperature sensors, a pressure sensor and two pH sensors along with respective data loggers, Modbus with a Sim card. Performance study of this horizontal biogas plant was carried out and the results have been tabulated.
