Abstract
Deep beams are structural elements loaded as simple beams in which a significant amount of the load is carried to the supports by a compression force combining the load and the reaction. Utility pipes and ducts are necessary to accommodate essential services in a building. The presence of openings in the web of a reinforced concrete beam leads to many problems in the beam behavior such as reduction in the beam stiffness, excessive cracking, excessive deflection and reduction in the beam strength. This study investigates experimentally the strengthening of reinforced concrete deep beams with circular opening. A total 8 deep beams with one opening, two opening and normal were constructed and tested under point loading of 50Ton. The test specimen had a cross section of 180x400mm and a total length of 820mm. Test parameters included the opening size, location of opening, web reinforcement provided, steel fiber percentage and the presence of CFRP sheet. All the beams tested under point loading failed in perfect diagonal compression shear. In all the beams cracks started as flexural cracks, but no cracks were observed up to 45% of the ultimate load. Beam with 2 circular opening carried about 79% of ultimate load and beam with a hole at center has no effect on load carrying capacity. Steel fiber reinforced beam show no increase in load carrying capacity and beam with cranked special reinforcement show 33% increase in load carrying capacity. But the addition of steel fiber lead to reduction in crack width compared to other beams.
