Abstract
The study of this paper is to find the optimal use of tyre rubber in cement concrete. The tyre rubber crumb is replaced with fine aggregate partially, with 5%, 10%, and 15% replacement mixed with M40 grade of concrete. The rubber crumb is vulcanised first before mixing with concrete. The normal tyre rubber is also mixed with concrete to compare the results of vulcanised rubber concrete with normal rubber concrete and control concrete. The tests were done to study the change in compressive strength, flexural strength, split tensile strength and effect of sulphate content. The tests showed that there is decrease in compressive strength on increasing the rubber content both in normal rubber concrete and vulcanised concrete but the reduction of compressive strength in vulcanised was much lower than normal rubber concrete. The split tensile strength also showed reduction than control concrete but the flexure strength was equal or slightly lower than control concrete with 5% replacement. The rubberised concrete also showed increase in toughness and improved bond between concrete particles thus reducing intense cracking.
